BACKGROUND OF MODERN ASSAMESE LITERATURE

This is a study of the social and intellectual background of modern Assamese literature with a socio-historical outlook, covering the period from the coming of the Britishers in 1826 to the closure of the “JONAKI”, the first fruit bearing literary journal , in 1903. The study of the history of Assamese literature inspired the author to scrutinise the factors which directly or indirectly guided and governed its trends and tendencies and its causes and courses.
