IN 1966, there were flames of rebellion in the then Lushai hill district of Assam. The Lushais, now known as the Mizos, became desperate to seek independence from the Indian State. Under the leadership of Laldenga, the Mizo National Front (MNF) started a massive revolution for securing independence. It was during those days of massive unrest unfolded by the rebellious activities, the colorful childhood days of the Lushai hill district school girl Smriti’s small world had a robust turning point. The happiness of those days gradually evaporated. That little girl Smriti saw for herself the brutality in the ground and the other side of the revolution as well. Seeing the reality in the ground, she was convinced that whoever start the revolution, finally it is the common people who suffer in the last analysis. This work “The war I witnessed” is the manifestation of the aspiration of the Lushai people for independence, the rebellion, State repression and even in the midst of these all the glaring reflections of humanity in it .
